Your room is part of every EQ, compression, balance, and reverb decision you make. The goal is not a perfectly flat studio. It is a repeatable listening position that tells the truth consistently enough for you to learn its remaining biases.
Before correcting the mix, confirm that the problem follows the mix out of the room.
Start with symmetry
Place the listening position on the room’s center line whenever possible. The left and right speakers should see similar boundaries and reflective surfaces. Asymmetry makes center imaging and panning decisions unstable.

Build the monitoring triangle
The distance between the speakers should be close to the distance from each speaker to your head. Aim the tweeters near ear height and adjust toe-in until the phantom center becomes precise without narrowing the image unnaturally.

Control boundary effects
Speaker distance from the front wall changes low-frequency behavior. Small movements can create large changes at the listening position. Test a few deliberate positions and measure or listen with the same reference each time.

- Keep rear ports clear as specified by the manufacturer
- Use stands or stable isolation
- Document the best position
Treat reflections by priority
Start with first-reflection points and bass control rather than covering every surface with thin foam. Broadband absorption at side reflections and behind the listening position usually improves focus more than decorative treatment.

Create a monitoring routine
Use a consistent primary level, a quiet check, mono, headphones, and a small consumer system. The room becomes more trustworthy when your evaluation routine stays stable.
