A final mix pass should be boring in the best possible way. Its job is not to reopen every creative decision. It is to catch preventable errors, confirm translation, and produce clearly labeled files that match the approved version.
Separate creative revision from quality control. You hear different problems when you stop asking whether the mix is exciting.
Run a top-to-bottom listen
Listen without stopping and write time-stamped notes. Do not fix during the pass. Interrupting playback keeps you from hearing pacing, section contrast, and emotional continuity.
- Clicks and pops
- Abrupt edits
- Missing audio
- Late mutes
- Distracting breaths
- Section energy
- Ending and tail
Audit the lead
The lead vocal or instrument deserves a dedicated pass because small automation and edit problems become obvious only when attention stays on one source.
- Word-to-word intelligibility
- Sibilance
- Breath consistency
- Tuning artifacts
- Delay throws
- Reverb transitions
- Double and harmony alignment
Audit the edges
Check the extreme low and high frequencies, the stereo edges, and the quietest moments. These areas hide rumble, noise, phase problems, harsh cymbals, and effects that continue after the music stops.
Confirm translation and mono
Use one reliable alternate system, one small speaker, headphones, low volume, and mono. You are confirming stability—not restarting the mix because each system has a different color.
- Lead remains clear
- Groove remains intact
- Low end remains controlled
- No critical element disappears
- Brightness remains comfortable
Export with intent
Export the full song with the correct sample rate and bit depth. Label versions clearly. If a loud reference is required, create it separately from the un-limited mix.
- 01Confirm start and end
- 02Confirm master-bus chain
- 03Export full-resolution mix
- 04Export alternate versions
- 05Re-import and listen
- 06Archive the approved session
PRINTABLE FIELD WORK
Pre-Master Quality Control
Complete once after creative approval and again after the final export is re-imported.
