Gain staging is simply level management from one stage of the signal path to the next. In modern floating-point DAWs, it is usually less fragile than internet advice suggests. The real goals are clean capture, predictable processing, useful fader resolution, and enough output headroom.
Use level to make every stage behave predictably—not to satisfy a magic meter reading.
Record cleanly, not maximally
Modern 24-bit recording provides ample usable range. Healthy peaks with generous margin are safer than chasing the top of the meter. Avoid clipping at the converter and keep noise practical.

Understand plugin sensitivity
Many digital processors are level-independent, while analog-modeled saturation, compression, and console plugins respond differently as input level changes. If a processor becomes harsher or more compressed than expected, reduce its input and compare at matched output level.
Use trims before faders
Clip gain or input trim establishes a workable level entering the chain. The channel fader then controls the musical balance. This keeps automation and fader movement in a useful range.

Protect every fixed ceiling
Floating-point buses may tolerate internal overs, but converters, exports, fixed-point plugins, and some analog models do not. The final output should not clip, and inter-sample peaks should be considered when creating release masters.

Separate mix headroom from mastering loudness
A mix does not need an arbitrary peak target if it is clean and not clipped, but practical headroom makes handoff and processing easier. Do not damage the balance to hit a number. Deliver an un-clipped mix and communicate whether bus processing is intentional.
